East Riding Union of Golf Clubs
Senior Championship

Brough Golf Club
Friday 19th May 2023

Some familiar names were in the frame for the ERUGC's first individual major championship of the year, but it was a beaming Keith Broadfoot of Hessle Golf Club, making his senior debut, who took home the trophy.

2023 East Riding President Mike Dawson presented the trophy to Keith at a well attended prize-giving.

Keith's scintillating 69 around a Brough course in immaculate condition given the wet spring got the job done by three strokes from Hull's Sunil Mukerjea. The expected challenge from the stellar final group of Richard Norton, Andy Woodhead and Alan Wright failed to materialised and the latter two had to settle for the gross prizes in their respective age categories with 74s.

The course played long off the back tees and Brough's punishing rough led to some high scores despite the excellent weather enjoyed by the whole field.

Best gross in the over 70s category went to the evergreen Brian Witty of Scarborough North Cliff with an excellent 78.

Best nett prizes went to Michael Broadley of Beverley in Category A (aged 50-59) with a one under par 67 who pipped Brough's Jamie Haldenby by a shot.

In Category B (60-69) Geoff Rankin of the Union's newest member club Drax had the best of the day nett 66, edging out another home player Steve Mews by two.

The neat spread of nett prizes across different clubs was completed in Category C (70+) by Erik Sologub of the KP Club and Bryan Jones of Cave Castle who had 71 and 72 respectively.

ERUGC Secretary John Illingworth and Competition Secretary Dave Greenwood were pleased with the healthy entry of 80 players from across all corners of the district. Dave thanked Brough for the presentation of the course and their excellent hospitality throughout the day. A big thanks also to the sterling job done by starter Andy Pittaway and the help on the desk given by past President Edward Clark.

The next event is the Millennium Championship Final on Sunday 4th June hosted by Withernsea GC.

Entry is now also open for both the East Riding Amateur Championship on 18th June at Cave Castle Golf Club and the East Riding Open Championship at Hornsea Golf Club on 16th July.
