Rules of The Open Championship

Specific rules governing The Open Championship


(i) Entry is open to members of Clubs affiliated to the Union with a handicap not exceeding 8 and to professionals and trainee professionals registered with The Professional Golfers Association retained by and working at such Clubs. The competition shall be played from scratch over 36 holes


(ii) In the event of entries exceeding 72 there will be a ballot of the highest handicap entrants.


(iii) In the event of a tie regulation (4.(i)) shall apply.


(iv) The winner of the event shall hold the Needier Trophy for one year.


(v) The leading amateur shall hold the George Ash Salver for one year.


(vi) The allocation of prize money to the professionals shall be decided by the organising committee.


In the event of a tie, the winners shall share the Salver for an equal period of time, in alphabetical order by surname.
