Jack Northgraves wins 2022 Junior Championship

Another 'blistering day' was the forecast for the Junior Championship and they were not wrong. Not a cloud in the sky all day and hot!!!  The hill top location of the KP Club provided the perfect setting.

37 Juniors entered for the day, the majority for the 36 hole Junior Championship.

Play started at 8am with all players fully loaded with water and covered with factor 50. It promised to be a hard 36 holes.

Highlights of the first round were a excellent level par 70,  with 4 birdies & 4 bogeys, for Jack Northgraves (Ganton) closely followed by Harry Mukerjea (Hull) 72, Grace Lambert (Hessle) 74, and Cooper Beck and Callum Burns (both Cottingham) with 75's

The second round saw a wilting field replenished by the  ER water wagon as every entrant completed the 36 holes with no hole not scored on ( i.e. no NR's) Well done all, great effort.

Jack, in the first group out, completed a second round 78 for a 148 total, leaving it open for the chasers to pip him to the title if they posted a similar or slightly improved score in the afternoon. Cooper playing with Jack matched his morning score with a 75 to finish on 150, Grace fell away with an 81 leaving Harry as the only late challenge, unfortunately after a 36 out Harry couldn't hold on and finished with a 78 for another 150 total. Bobbly Beasley (Cottingham) was one of the few to improve in the second round and with an excellent 75 finished on 152.

Well done Jack a deserved winner.

For the net trophy Harry Muckerjea's net 63 & 69 for a 8 under total of 132 saw Harry defend the trophy he won in 2021. Billy Hazlewood (Filey) was the net runner up with a 70 & 66 for a 136 total.

Jacob Greenwood wins 2022 Junior Development Championship

Following the first round tee off times of the Junior Championship it was time to launch the inaugral Junior Development Championship.

This competition is for the improving player or the younger golfer (with a handicap index of 24.5 or above) who want a taste of 'Championship Golf'.

All three groups were announced on to the tee by ER starter Andy Pittaway. For a few it was their first time off a yellow tee but all proceeded to smack the ball straight down the middle...No nerves at all...

The players were on their own as regards golfing decisions and general play. Parents and ER support helped each group keep up with play, but it was great to see how they all handled their game and also how much they enjoyed it.

Leading the way and winner on the day after the 18 holes was Jacob Greenwood (Hornsea). Receiving 39 shots Jacob had nothing higher than a 7 on his card as he posted a total of 44 points. Very steady play.

In second place was Charlie Simpson from Hull Golf Club who had 42 pts which included 3 pars.

In 3rd place was Malci Greenwood of Boothferry Golf Club, who again had 3 pars in his 38 pts.

Pos. Player Club Score Pts
Winner Jacob Greenwood Hornsea 44
2nd Charlie Simpson Hull 42
3rd Malci Greenwood Boothferry 38

It must be noted that some of these players are only 10 and 11 years old and it was more the physical test, than their skill, that thwarted much lower scores. Hopefully this taste of a Junior golf day will see them move up to the Junior Championship and beyond in the next few years.

But more importantly develop a life long love for the game of golf.

President for 2022 John IIlingworth launched an encouraging 'Churchillian' type speech, which although for the field was the first time they had encountered John's ramblings, it seemed to be warmly welcomed by the players, large supporting groups of parents, grandparents and all.

Thank you to all the greens staff for again presenting the course in excellent condition despite the lack of rain, the.club house staff and all at Kilnwick Percy Golf Club for the warm welcome and hospitality throughout the day.

Edward & Eileen Clark for again manning the desk and Andy Pittaway our starter. Thanks also to Gary Sharp of KP Club, John Illingworth and Dave Greenwood, who walked round with each group. All three said it was an enjoyable, if hot, experience.
