Wuthering Heights - men suffer high on the hills over Huddersfield

YIDU Team Championship
Crosland Heath Golf Club
Sunday 14th September 2025

'Out on the wily, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green...'

High above Huddersfield on a windswept moor is Crosland Heath Golf Club (with one 's') - one of the most picturesque courses in the county - the home union had assembled an all star team to attempt an unprecendented YIDU League and 6 man Team Championship double and they duly delivered. Big time.

After somehow managing to get all 36 holes finished as the rains came mid afternoon, Halifax & Huddersfield drew clear and ended a combined 12 under par. On a course with an observatory of all things, you needed a telescope to see the leaders as they got further and further away in the distance! Teesside ended as their nearest challengers some 34 shots adrift.

England international Dylan Shaw-Radford led the way with his personal 7 under total which took the best individual honours and Yorkshire Men's regular Habib Khan managed to play two rounds without dropping a single shot anywhere! Remarkable golf.

So, for the second Sunday running, Halifax & Huddersfield were celebrating whilst East Riding looked a little flat at the end of a long season.

East Riding's six had their moments and had quite a few strong starts at the unique 1st and 2nd holes (pictured top), but soon gave shots back around the turn. Player of the Year Leigh Gawley and Paul Wray posted 73s after lunch, but the afternoon turned into playing for some pride and trying climb a couple of places in the team standings. Despite a slightly improved team total, East Riding limped home in 8th place. A second Sunday running to forget for Manager Rees Brown's men as a hush descended over the dinner table as the last scores appeared on the monitors.

Rees had the small consolation of picking up the Larard Trophy for the League runners up and is pictured with ERUGC President Dave Greenwood who roamed the moor supporting the team for the last time in his year of office.

Thanks to ERUGC Secretary John Illingworth for all of his impeccable organisation and supporting the team with the usual snacks and water. Roll on 2026 and another league campaign and a Team Championship at the lovely Rudding Park in Harrogate.

Tributes were paid to Alan Barraclough who has presided over all things YIDU for a remarkable 31 years with wife Joan always at his side. 'Big boots to fill' indeed and everyone present wished them well in their retirement.
