Semi finalists decided after day of drama at Hull

The top 16 from the recent East Riding Junior Championship (in the draw below with their gross finishing positions) gathered at Hull Golf Club for two rounds of matchplay to decide this year's semi finalists.

Amy Staveley of Ganton led the eight morning matches off as the champion and proved too consistent for Hornsea's Redford Osborne and had a long lunch after winning 7&6.

Hull Junior Captain George Pepper's local knowledge won through against Seth Fairburn 2up. In the other matches in the top half, Cottingham teammates Bobby Beasley and Alfie Slater joined Amy for an extended lunch with commanding victories over Tom Anderson and Jack Wall respectively.

In the bottom half of the draw Warren Burns beat James Williamson 7&5 and went through to play Ganton's Harry Mukerjea in the quarter finals who had beaten fellow East Riding u18s regular George Coope on the 16th.

The tighest match of the round involved Cave Castle's Tom Adcock and Hornsea's Seth Topham. Seth prevailed at the first extra hole to set up his quarter final against Callum Burns who took out Ruby Sutton of Drax 4&3.

Amy once again led out the afternoon ties and beat George Pepper 4&3. Both Burns boys proved too strong for their opponents in the gusty conditions at Hull with a 3&2 victory for Warren and a 3&1 win for Callum.

That left all eyes on the Beasley / Slater match which was nip and tuck all the way. Bobby led by one on the 18th tee, but lost his drive in the right rough and had to walk back to the tee. Alfie still managed to make hard work of winning the hole and tying the match, but all the momentum was with him going up the first extra hole and he shook hands after a nerveless regulation par.

Due to clashes in the golfing diary, the semi finals and final have been moved to Sunday 8th October back at Hull Golf Club where they will compete for the Golden Jubilee Trophy, presented by ERUGC President Edward Clark in 1997 who still runs the event to this day!

Thanks to all at Kirk Ella for courtesy of the course and looking after all of the players and a large band of supporters throughout the day.
