Extra time drama as Junior Matchplay begins at Hull

The top 16 players from the recent East Riding Junior Championship at Hainsworth Park gathered at a sunny Hull Golf Club for the first two rounds of the Union's Matchplay Championship.

Top seed Seth Topham from Hornsea was out of the blocks quickly and accounted for Filey's Billy Hazelwood in double quick time. Hull's George Pepper follwed Seth onto the sunbathed patio for an early lunch after a convincing 5&4 win over Hainsworth's Freddie Moore

Will Bentley from Beverley overcame Cottingham's Ollie Spencer at the 18th, whilst Hull's Junior Captain Harry Earl continued his recent good form to beat number 4 seed Ethan Matthews from Burstwick 5&4. Ganton's Harry Mukerjea set up a quarter final with Hull's Tom Hinks with their wins over Louie  Brookes (Skidby) and Cave Castle's Jack Wall respectively. The final two players through to the afternoon quarter finals were East Riding teammates Bobby Beasley and Tom Adcock. They both won 4&3 against Jack Burt and Harry Mayoh respectively.

Only two of the eight matches had gone beyond the 15th green, with just one going all the way. All that was to change during an afternoon of high drama...

Seth Topham was pushed all the way by George Pepper who would have progressed to the semis had the Hornsea youngster not bravely sunk a tricky 8 footer at the last. Seth got over the line at the first extra hole,

In match 2 Bentley met Earl and both rued chances to win at the last. Harry looked to have got the measure of his Beverley opponent having just run through the back of the par 5 1st in two, whilst Will was bunkered in three. When Harry narrowly failed to make birdie, Will splashed out to 15 feet and bravely holed to carry on the match. Harry had tree trouble and Will's three putt bogey proved enough at the end of an epic match [pictured below].

The third of the quarters also went to extra holes after Harry Mukerjea had missed a five footer to win in normal time [pictured below]. Tom Hinks came up just short of the 19th in two and Harry's unmentionable third from the right trees effectively ended the match.

The final clash 'only' went to the 18th when Caveman Tom Adcock just oulasted Hull's Bobby Beasley.

The semi finals and final will return to Hull Golf Club on Sunday 22 September when there will be a new name on the Golden Jubilee Trophy presented by Edward Clark in the year of his ERUGC presidency. Edward continues to oversee the event every year on his home course.

Thanks to Hull Golf Club staff for looking after all of the players and supporters throughout the day and to the greens staff for presenting the course in such wonderful condition.
