Amy caps stellar season with historic matchplay victory

Amy Staveley rewrote the history books as she became the first girl to win the East Riding Junior Matchplay title since its inception in 1997.

The last four standing gathered in the fog at Hull Golf Club early on Sunday morning for the eagerly awaited semi finals. Amy faced Cottingham's Alfie Slater in the first semi final and Ganton's +3.5 handicap index Amy came out on top with her accurate driving and sharp short game.

In the second semi final, the draw had thrown together the two Burns brothers from Cottingham, Warren and Callum. Despite Callum's birdie at the first, older brother Warren soon found his range and held on to also win 3&2.

Alfie had aggrevated a stomach injury and was unable to play in the 3rd/4th playoff, so Callum took home the third place prize and was able to join the large gallery to watch the final.

Warren was out of the traps quickly and won the 1st with a birdie. Amy drew level with a four at the long uphill third, before getting her nose ahead with a par at the 6th. Warren's arrow like 9 iron to a foot at the short 8th levelled the match, before Amy won the 9th with a birdie to go to the turn at 1up.

A poor Staveley drive at the 10th handed Warren the hole and they were level again, before a classy up and down from 75 yards for birdie at the 12th gave Amy the advantage with just six to play. A succession of halves brought them to 16 where Warren couldn't get up and down from the front right bunker.

This left him two down and too much to do as Amy found the front of the par 5 17th green in two. Despite an enormous drive which only left him 120 yards to the flag, Warren's hopes were all but over as his wedge hopped off the back fringe.

An excellent final played in a great spirit was a fitting way to end the junior season. ER President Mike Dawson presented the trophy to Amy which completed the strokeplay / matchplay double for her having won the Junior Championship at Cottingham back in August. She took home the Golden Jubilee Trophy presented by Edward Clark in the year of his ERUGC presidency.

She has also won the Yorkshire Girls title this year and triumphed at the England Golf Girls' County Champion of Champions. Quite a year!

Thanks to all at Kirk Ella for courtesy of the course and looking after all of the players and a large band of supporters throughout the day.
