John is the ace in the pack at Mike's Filey finale

Mike Dawson's successful and enjoyable year as East Riding President ended at his home club of Filey with the traditional Past Presidents, Players and Executive get together.

Seven teams of 3 or 4 players tackled the challenging 'green' winter course in an am-am under a cloudless sky. Three scores to count at all the par 3s offered opportunities to pick up multiple points, but proved to be the death knell for some cards in the blustery conditions, especially over the testing back nine.

Three teams ended up separated by a solitary point, with one stroke of genius being the difference at the short 16th hole. John Ward, 2023 Burstwick Captain, holed his seven iron to the tough back left pin much to the delight of teammates ERUGC Competition Secretary Dave Greenwood, last year's Withernsea Captain Phil Burton and 2024 Filey Captain Steve Devanney. It was John's first ever 'ace' which bagged his team the prizes presented by President Mike in front of all the players. Thanks to Filey Golf Club, its staff and members for making us so welcome.

John (obviously) claimed the last of the four nearest the pin prizes at the 16th (pictured below), whilst other incidentals were awarded to Trevor Loten, 2023 KP Captain at the 3rd, ER Secretary John Illingworth at the long par 3 6th and Ben Gardiner, 2023 Beverley & ER Captain, at the shortened feature hole 10th..

A wonderful day on the cliff top to bring Mike's year to a close. We'll do it all again when incoming President Jonty Hall welcomes us to Hornsea Golf Club in 12 months time.

Jonathan Clark

ERUGC Junior League Secretary
