Burns brothers earn Cottingham a half at Hull

A sensational pitch at the last gave Callum Burns the four he needed to snatch a half for Cottingham in a thrilling ERUGC Junior League fixture at Hull.

After a 6-0 win in last week's opening fixture, Cottingham didn't have it all their own way at a Kirk Ella layout in superb condition. Harry Mukerjea was out first for the home team against East Riding under18s team-mate Ewan Mackenzie and won 3&2. Another ER regular, the big hitting Warren Burns took out George Pepper on the 17th green to leave the match in the balance.

It all came down to the younger Burns brother Callum who went up early against the much less experienced Tom Hinks. The Hull younsgter however fought his way back, making good use of his 15 shots, to stand all square on the 17th tee. A superb approach at the long uphill par 4 gave Tom the 5 nett 4 he needed to go dormie, but a superb pitch at the 18th to two feet from Burns [pictured above] tied the match and left both teams still unbeaten.

Over the hill at Hessle, Burstwick registered a clean sweep with Tom Ward taking out Yorkshire Boys regular Luke Thornton 2&1 and Ethan Matthews beating Callum Akester 5&4. The bottom match was conceded by Hessle who had the rest of their squad tied up with exams. Their 6-0 win takes them to second in the league just a point behind Cottingham.
