Brave New World as Huxley joins favourites in semis

The opening two rounds of the 2025 Junior Matchplay Championship went pretty much to form all day until Huxley Sawyer upset Yorkshire Boys regular Ewan Mackenzie in the last of the quarter finals.

Junior Matchplay organiser Edward Clark gathered the 16 players around the putting green (pictured below) at 9.00am to go through the draw and then got all 8 matches off on time at Hull Golf Golf Club.

In round one, 7 of the 8 leading qualifiers from last week's ERUGC Junior Championship progressed, with the exception of Hull's Callum Akester whose 'reward' for his brilliant performance in the qualifying event was to come up against Ganton's Seth Topham who was 'only' seeded 10th after an uncharacteristic off day last week.

So the quarters kicked off after lunch with Hull's ER Junior Champion George Pepper in imperious form in beating Ethan Matthews of Burstwick 6&5.

Recently crowned Yorkshire under 16 Champion Charles Wright was too strong for Cave Castle's Tom Adcock and then Seth Topham accounted for the gutsy Max Walker of Brough 4&2.

That left Cave's Huxley Sawyer on the course against many people's favourite for the title Ewan Mackenzie. Huxley hadn't read the script and fired excellent iron after excellent iron to eventually win 3&2.

The semis and final will be played at Hull Golf Club on Sunday 26th October.
