EAST RIDING V LEEDS UNDER 18’S AT CAVE CASTLE GOLF CLUB, 11TH APRIL 2017
The first YIDU match for the East Riding was played at the Cave Castle Golf Club on Tuesday 11th April. Leeds Union were the visitors and arrived with a strong, confident team.
The morning foursomes started at 10am with this year's Boys’ Captain Ben Ratcliffe and his trusty partner Joe Allenby. The pair got off to a shaky start going 2-down after 6 holes when the Leeds pair begun with 2 birdies. Joe and Ben used their experience to eventually run out 2&1 winners.
Tom Duck and Jack Maxey again took time to gel and found the windy conditions difficult. The back 9 saw them pull out a lead and cruised to a 4&3 win.
With two wins on the board Leeds came back fighting and won the next four matches. Jude Tarbotton and Charlie Milner tried all the way only to lose 2&1. Lewis Hunt and Luke Ingram lost 3&1, Brendan Wright and Dan Swales lost 2 down which was a creditable display with Dan playing his debut. Finally the pairing of Matty Atkinson and Olly Beckett (also in his first match) faltered in the wind, losing 2 down. This was Matt's first loss ever as last year he was undefeated.
8-4 down at lunch meant that ERUGC needed to win eight singles matches out of 12 for victory. A tall order for the young team but things started better and good news was filtering around the impressive Cave Castle Golf Club. Joe led the team out again and overcame his Leeds rival 2&1.
Jack Maxey strolled to a fine 5&3 win after some quality golf and when Captain Ben won 2-up we had won three of the top four matches. Lewis Hunt and Charlie Milner both came from behind to win by 3 holes to 2. Losses from Tom, Jude and Brendan meant that with four matches left we had drawn level on points with Leeds. With tension building Olly Beckett took the East Riding ahead with a 3&2 win and following behind, Dan Swales recorded the best of the day 5&4 win which took our total to 18 points.
ERUGC needed 1 more point for victory with two matches left and it wasn't long in coming as Matty Atkinson got up a head of steam winning holes 15 and 17 and secured the win 2&1. Luke Ingram fought hard but just ran out if steam losing 1-down.
A fantastic comeback win against a strong union who are one of the favourites for this year’s league. Phil Woodcock and Steve Raybould were very proud of the boy's and thanks to President Steve Thornton along with Secretary John Illingworth for their encouragement throughout the day.
Next match is at Springhead on Friday 21st April.
