2015 YIDU Under 18's Team Results

The Under 18's went into the last three matches of the year with only one win under their belts. First up was Teeside at Scarborough South Cliff on July 30th. Foursomes wins from Matty Raybould and Matty Jessop 2/1, Alex Limb and Tom Duck 4/3, James Halford and Ben Ratcliffe 3/2, in the morning resulted and a six points all split at lunch. The singles started well with wins from Matty Raybould 5/4 and Joe Allenby 3/2. Teeside then won 7 of the next 9 matches with our only other wins coming from Tom Duck 7/6 and Ben Ratcliffe 2/1.

The final score was Teeside 22 East Riding 14.

Next we travelled to Knaresborough to play Harrogate Union. Without Harry Woolfall, Joe Allenby, Eddie Pearson and Nathan Wright it was a chance to give our younger players some valuable playing experience. Eleven of the team were aged 16 and under, with Lewis Hunt, Jack Maxey, Tom Duck and Jude Tarbotton only 14. They all played some great golf with Jack and Lewis winning their foursomes match 6/4 and singles wins from Jude 5/3 and Lewis 3/2.

Foursomes wins also from Jessop and Raybould 5/4 and singles wins from James Halford 2/1, Alex Limb 4/2 and a half from Ben Ratcliffe added to our tally. The performance of the day was by Matty Raybould who beat the newly crowned Yorkshire boy's champion George Muscroft by holing an eight footer on the 18th to win 1up. It was a really promising performance and we gave them a scare just losing 21-15 in the end.

The final match of 2015 was at the ERUGC President's home course of Beverley. York were our visitors for the day and in determined mood the match got under way with the customary foursomes. For the third match running Jessop and Raybould added the first point winning 2/1.

Tom Duck and Henry Howarth breezed to a 4/2 win with Youngsters Ben Ratcliffe and Lewis Hunt adding another point with their 2/1 win. Six all again at lunch left the match in the balance again but inspired by playing their last ever junior inter district match, Harry Woolfall won 4/2, Eddie Pearson won 5/4 and Nathan Wright won 4/2. They all signed off with a win and we thank them for their efforts and commitment over the last 4 years. They should all be very proud of themselves, and we wish them good luck for the future from all the boy's team and officials.

Wins again from Matty Raybould 4/3, Matty Jessop 7/6, James Halford and Alex Limb both 4/2 left the East Riding cruising to victory. The final matches on the course were fittingly Lewis Hunt who with a 3/2 victory made it 4 wins on the trot to finish the season and Ben Ratcliffe who sealed the match and the Under 18's player of the year trophy with a 4/3 win. Final score was ERUGC 24 - York 12.

Ben lost only one match all year in his first season and has a cool calmness about him along with a very good golf game. His final winning tally of 32pts was two points ahead of next years boys captain Matty Raybould.

Under 18s Team vs Bradford at West Bradford Golf Club, 23rd July 2015

The East Riding travelled to West Bradford G.C. for our fourth match of the season. Once again we put out a strong looking team and in a determined mood set out in pursuit of our first win of the year.

Leading the way was team captain Harry Woolfall and Eddie Pearson who fought all the way round but finally lost 2&1. Matty Jessop and Matty Raybould overpowered their opponents with some long drives and great putting from Jessop, coming out on top 3&2. Michael Patterson and Henry Howarth recovered brilliantly and produced a birdie on the 18th to edge out their opponents 1 up. This proved a vital point as our third win in the foursomes came from Ben Ratcliffe and Charlie Milner. They controlled their match and ran out 3&2 winners.

With the match even at lunch 6 points all the atmosphere was tense. The first five matches were shared with wins from Harry Woolfall, Matty Jessop, and a great half from Michael Patterson who birdied the 18th hole.

The next match reaching the 18th, between Tom Duck and his opponent was also level. With both players hitting great drives, Tom stood up and rolled in a birdie putt to clinch a vital win. This definitely swung the match our way and with Eddie Pearson, Henry Howarth and Nathan Wright all winning things finally looked rosey for the East Riding. Charlie Milner completed a great day, adding a singles win to his morning foursomes, taking maximum points on his debut.

The final score ended with us winning 22pts to 14pts. The match was played in great spirit and everyone dug deep to grind out a much needed victory.

The next match is on Thursday 30th July at Scarborough South Cliff against Teeside, so please come along and give your support.

Finally congratulations to all the boys in the team for the manner in which we are playing.

Team for next match V Teeside on 30/7/15:

H.Woolfall (captain), M.Raybould, M.Jessop, J.Allenby, M.Patterson, E.Pearson, T.Duck, J.Halford, H.Howarth, N.Wright, B.Ratcliffe, J.Maxey.

Under 18s Team vs Leeds at Bridlington Golf Club, 25th May 2015

The East Riding had 3 players on debut who all managed maximum points. James Halford was paired with Tom Duck in the morning foursomes and they coasted to a 2&1 win. Aaron Brettell, and Ben Ratcliffe playing together also won their foursomes 3&1 in impressive style. The only other winners were the established pairing of Matty Jessop and Eddie Pearson who played some of the best golf of the day in their 2&1 win playing in match number two. The match was all square at lunch with each team on six points.

In the afternoon singles four out of the first five matches went down the par 5 eighteenth hole. Match one between Yorkshire team mates Matty Lees and Matty Raybould was a hard fought affair. Raybould kept clawing back from some early loses to draw level after 17 holes but was finally defeated at the 18th when Lees birdied.

Next came Matty Jessop who with some fantastic shots played fearless golf halfing the 18th and the match against 1 handicaper Daniel Bradbury. Michael Patterson, playing against 2 handicaper Todd Hughes found his touch on the speedy greens and holed a 25 footer on the 18th to win another great match. It was the turn of Eddie Pearson next to reach the last all square. After their drives both players struggled to kill the other player off and it was Marcus Shepherd of Leeds who just stole the match 1up.

Wins from James Halford by 2&1, Aaron Brettell by 5&4, and Ben Ratcliffe by 4&3 saw the East Riding new boys keep their 100% records intact. Nathan Wright from Hornsea was our final winner beating his opponent by 3&2 to complete another impressive display, he is rapidly becoming an accomplished team player.

The final result was Leeds 19 pts and East Riding 17 pts with Leeds winning the singles by the narrowest of margins 6 1/2  to 5 1/2.

Steve and Phil were very proud of all the boys who raised their levels once again and nearly pulled off a victory against a vastly more experienced Leeds Team. Things are looking good for the future and we are already focused on the next match against Halifax & Huddersfield at Bradley Park on 5th July.

Congratulations also to all the East Riding boys who represented us in the Yorkshire Boys Championship at Huddersfield G.C. on Wednesday 27th May. We had 12 participants with Joe Allenby finishing 9th, Matty Raybould 10th, Matty Jessop 16th, and Michael Patterson 18th out of all the best under 18's in Yorkshire.

Under 18's Team vs Sheffield at Cave Castle Golf Club, 2nd April 2015

Despite the final result I was pleased with our teams overall performance. We had Jude Tarbotton winning his singles match on his debut and he impressed with his composure and attitude throughout the day. Lewis Hunt also in his first match was very tenacious having fought back losing the first five holes to take his singles match to the 16th hole. Well done to them both!

Team Captain Harry Woolfall led the team with a strong performance beating their best player in his singles match by 2&1. Jack Maxey was in great form in his singles , winning 3&1, beating his partner with some great attacking golf.

The morning foursomes didn't go as well as we had expected with Joe Allenby and Connor Todd our only win. Matty Raybould and Nathan Wright fought back from 4 down to get a great half and look a promising pair for this season. Matty added another point in his singles with another tough battle which included 5 birdies from each player.

Eddie Pearson also had a strong performance in his singles finishing on the 18th hole with another halved match. Sheffield are a very good team but we are closing the gap. They went home having had a tough challenge.

We were very proud of all the ERUGC boys, and lets now look forward to our next match at Ganton against the Yorkshire Girls on the 10th of May.
