ERUGC Men's Matchplay

2015 Final Report

Hornsea’s Leigh Gawley Triumphs over Cottingham Parks Ben Borman at Gusty Ganton.

The final of the ERUGC matchplay knockout championship was played on Tuesday 25th August. The weather was fine, sunny and breezy when the 36-hole match, between Leigh Gawley of Hornsea and Ben Borman of Cottingham Parks set off on the magnificent inland links course at Ganton. The testy wind was to play an important factor throughout the course of the match. The opening 2 holes were halved. Leigh won the 3rd with a par and went 2up by holing a putt from the edge of the 4th green for a birdie 3. Ben won the 5th with a par when Leigh had bunkered himself. From the 6th to the 9th Ben found a succession of the cavernous Ganton, bunkers losing the 6th to Leigh’s birdie and the 7th and 9th holes to pars.

At the 8th hole Ben almost holed his greenside bunker shot to earn himself a credible half in par. By the halfway stage of the first round Leigh was up in the match by 4 holes but Ben was not giving in and when he repeated his good bunker play at the difficult par three 10th hole to make par he reduced the deficit to 3 holes. Unfortunately for Ben on the 11th hole he played the wrong ball from the rough to lose that hole but won the 12th when Leigh lost his ball in the deep gorse. The gusty wind made driving very difficult and finding fairways was always a great bonus. On the 13th Ben found the gorse to the left of the green and had to concede that hole, and he was bunkered greenside on the 14th and lost that hole to Leigh’s birdie to go 5 down. Both players had creditable par 4’s on the 16th but on the 17th Ben reduced the deficit by 1 hole with a birdie 3. The 18th hole was halved in 4’s with both players making pars from greenside bunkers. The morning round ended with Leigh having a commanding four-hole lead.

Following the lunch break Ben quickly set about reducing Leigh’s lead with birdies at the 2nd and 4th holes and when Leigh three putted the 6th green his lead had been reduced to 1 hole. The following four holes were all halved in par but on the 11th it was Leigh’s turn to have bunker problems and he lost that hole to make the match all square. Although Ben had made a strong move and was playing well Leigh remained positive and resolute and on the 13th went one up when Ben again found the deep gorse but on the 14th Leigh 3 putted to bring the game back to all square. The 15th found Ben in a very difficult lie in the greenside bunker which he unfortunately failed to get out handing the lead back to Leigh. On the 16th hole Leigh hit a tremendous drive and proceeded to put his 2nd shot within a couple of feet of the pin which Ben conceded and left Leigh 2up with 2 holes to play.

Leigh was now back on his game and in full command and when he hit his tee shot onto the 17th green only some 12 foot from the hole it was game over for Ben. The final result being 3&1 in Leigh’s favour.

The game had been played in excellent spirit with both players showing some outstanding ability in very testing conditions. The match had been refereed by Cameron Thomson, President of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs and the trophy presentation was made to Leigh by the Captain of Ganton Golf Club, Mr. Roger Middleton.

2015 Semi-Final Report

Semi Final #1

The first semi-final to be decided was when close friends and fellow members of Hornsea Golf Club Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown played their match at Driffield Golf Club on Tuesday 11th August.

It was inevitable that two players who knew each other’s game so well would produce a closely fought match and so it was. Over the opening holes there was very little between the two players but by the 9th hole Rees held a two hole advantage. Rees had been driving immaculately with a newly acquired 2 iron but on the 11th he pulled his tee shot left into a water hazard and consequently lost the hole. On the 12th Rees regained his two hole advantage when Leigh three putted.

But in this see-saw match Leigh redeemed himself when he holed a putt the full length of the green to win the 13th hole with a birdie. Over the following three holes there was no change with Rees holding a one hole advantage going down the 17th but when he missed a short tap-in the game went to the 18th tee all square. Leigh’s second shot down the 18th found the left hand greenside bunker with Rees on the front fringe of the green for two. Rees’s first putt left him with an 8 foot return for his par. Leigh’s bunker shot left him with a 25 foot putt for his par but he had the advantage of going first and he took this by holing the putt leaving the pressure on Rees to hole his 8 footer which unfortunately he failed to do. Leigh had triumphed, winning the match by one hole.

Semi Final #2

The second semi-final was played at the Hull Golf Club between Ryan Gray of Driffield Golf Club and Ben Borman of the Cottingham Golf Club on Thursday 13th August. Again it was inevitable that two players who know each other’s game well from playing in the East Riding squad and this would produce another tight game.

Ben opened his account with a great birdie on the long par 5 first hole but Ryan had squared the match when Ben bunkered his second shot on the third hole. Over the following few holes little changed hands but Ryan did manage to establish a 2 hole lead which was reduced to 1 hole by the time they reached the 18th hole. Ryan’s drive was pulled way left giving Ben an opportunity to win the hole. Ryan had left himself with a difficult challenge to get his ball onto the green from where his tee shot had landed but he did get his third shot to within 12 foot to give himself a chance.

In the meantime Ben had hit the green in regulation and proceeded to get his par 4 leaving Ryan his 12 footer to win the match but unfortunately his putt just lipped out so the match was now all square and went to sudden death. Ben drove well down the 1st extra hole but again Ryan pulled his drive left leaving him an extremely difficult second. Ben proceeded to put his second shot close to the pin giving him an excellent chance for an eagle three, in the meantime Ryan was unable to get his ball to the green after three shots and at that point conceded the match.

The final of the ERUGC Matchplay will take place at the Ganton Golf Club on Tuesday 25th August when Leigh Gawley of the Hornsea Golf Club will play the 36 hole match against Ben Borman of the Cottingham Golf Club.

Spectators will be more than welcome.
