The long hot summer decided to take a vacation for the East Riding Amateur Championship and the 67 competitors were treated to a more traditional English summer’s day. A cool and decidedly dank start greeted the 7.00am tee time but conditions were about to worsen. Winds lashing at up to 40mph and rain sweeping horizontally across the course removed the last, lingering vestiges of what might be deemed as an entertaining pastime.
It is a tribute to the quality of the golfers that they managed to complete the course in anything like a decent score. All had tales of woe to tell on what might have been but the universal comment was “I’ve never played golf in conditions like that”. It wasn’t surprising, therefore, that with further inclement weather forecast, the Championship Committee agreed to limit the Championship to 18 holes on the basis that it was, on balance, impractical to complete the full 36.
Luke Robinson (Hornsea), Lewis Hunt (Burstwick), Jon Samuel (Hull), Andy Lockwood (Hessle) and Simon Boddy (Scarborough NC) all posted 7 over par 80’s. Matty Raybould’s 82 contained 13 pars, 4 bogies and a quintuple 9, great golf apart from the first where Ganton’s gorse got its revenge in early.
For only the second time in its history, and entirely due to the conditions, the Championship was shared when Hull’s Ben Rozenbroek and Dave Tarbotton posted 79’s. The margins were small and the victors survived just a little better than their rivals.
Burstwick's Lewis Hunt won the Rob McLeish trophy as leading Junior in the event.
The net prize was won by Cave Castle’s Freer Boddy who finished with a net 76, just 3 over on a tough day.
The Union would like to thank Gary Pearce, the new Ganton Secretary and his team for their wonderful facilities and generous hospitality.
Thanks, as ever, to Competition Secretary Chris Clarkson for organising the event and ERUGC Hon Secretary John Illingworth for running the desk on the day.
