Ian Stephenson wins the ERU Seniors' Championship, played at Flamborough Head Golf Club on Friday 16th June 2017.
A total of 43 golfers over the age of 55 played in the re-arranged Senior Championship at Flamborough on a fine and windy day.
The course was excellently prepared for the event with nearly all the players endorsing the fact and thanks and appreciation were passed onto the club and green keeping staff from our president Steve Thornton.
As is the case every year, the Senior Championship was a close run affair for the title and with only the last 3 ball on the course there seemed to be a possibility of a play-off again!
There were 2 x 77’s in the clubhouse; one was Keith Williamson from Hessle GC, who took a double bogey 7 down the last and the other was Frank McGuire, an amazing score considering Frank plays off 13 handicap just down the road at Bridlington Links! Both these scores were thought to be good in tricky conditions.
However, one of the last 3 scores to come in did match the 77! This was last year’s play-off winner Phil Cross, who had a couple of 3 putts late on in his round! In the end all 3 of the 77’s were upstaged by Ian Stephenson, who shot a very steady 76. Ian was last year’s runner up to Phil and he has won the title three times before.
The third member of this 3 ball was the reigning Yorkshire Seniors Champion, Alan Wright, who unfortunately and inadvertently drove out of bounds on the last to score 79!
Congratulations to Ian Stephenson and all the other prize winners.
